Fishing has become a challenge
Posted 03 August 2011, 9:14 am NDT
The fishing this week has undoubtedly turned into a dissappointment for some first time anglers to the Eagle. There is a lot of legend surrounding how high the catch rates are on this great river, but like any river, mother nature can change that with low and warm water conditions.

I fished last night on the sand bar, which right now is about 7-8 inches of water. I did see 7 fish porpoising and jumping in the small space as the evening cooled off, but the fish were not interested in taking what I presented. My #6 green bomber got two fish to rise 4 and 5 times respectively but when they decided to give up (or move on) it seemed nothing could bring them back. The rises in the shallow water were more like salar saying "go away" as he bumped my dry fly with his nose several times.

One guest reported landing a grilse last night fresh from the ocean with lice still attached. And we are catching a few in the bathtub pool, but with river conditions in a poor state there is no sight of improvement for the next few days. The long range forecast shows periods of rain for Goose Bay this weekend. We are hoping that this will dump some water on the Mealy Mountians and the Eagle Plateau and bring the river back to life, and with with it, the fishing expected.

We will be taking a trout fishing excursion to Sandwich Bay today with some of the guests. Stay tuned for results from that. It is late in the year for trout fishing in coastal water and I expect the trout will be glutted on bait fish and reluctant to take anything artificial, but it could lead to lots of excitement from "chasers" and maybe some cursing to go along with it!
